Here are some ideas for high quality reading books for children in different year groups throughout school. These are only intended as a guide and if your child is not yet able to read at the level for their year group it is perfectly fine for them to read books from lists for children in lower year groups. If you would like further information about the types of books that we recommend please speak to your child's class teacher for advice.

Stories at the heart of our curriculum

At Stanley Road we immerse children in high quality children's literature to not only help them to develop their skills as a reader but also a passion and enthusiasm for reading.
We have set out a list of books that children will study in detail as they move through the year groups at our school in addition to the Amazing Author topics that take place each year.
Books have been very carefully selected to ensure a broad range of subject matter, styles and levels of challenge.  We include at least one 'classic' book each year that may challenge pupils with more difficult vocabulary and sentence structure but at the same time still engaging children with a timeless narrative.

As children progress through school they will get the chance to study and enjoy books by the following authors -
Raymond Briggs, John Burningham, Allan Ahlberg, Beatrix Potter, Enid Blyton, Clive King, Eoin Colfer, Jeremy Strong, Beverly Naidoo, Nicki Cornwell, Berlie Doherty, William Shakespeare, Frank Cottrell Boyce and Louis Sachar.

Teachers will also share books from more popular authors such as Julia Donaldson, Roald Dahl, Jacqueline Wilson and David Walliams during story time.

Each year every class studies a different author for half a term. They find out about the author's life and read their books. This is part of our approach to immerse children in quality literature from an early age to help develop their reading skills and promote a love of reading.
Amazing Authors Plan
Reception - Julia Donaldson
Year 1 - Oliver Jeffers
Year 2 - Jill Murphy
Year 3 - Chris Riddell
Year 4 - Ted Hughes
Year 5 - Michael Morpurgo
Year 6 - CS Lewis

Here are some pictures of the displays around school that promote our Amazing Author topics.
