Congratulations again to 5GH and 5LA who jointly won the overall school attendance award for the Autumn term! They celebrated in style on Wednesday with a trip to the cinema to watch 'Alvin And The Chipmunks.' The children's behaviour was excellent whilst out in the community representing Stanley Road and they had a fantastic time. WELL DONE!
On Thursday year 5 had our Launch Day for our new topic - What Makes Oldham Special? We will be focusing on life in Oldham in the Victorian Era, at the height of the cotton industry and the centre of the industrial revolution. The children (and staff) looked great in their Victorian style costumes, and we had a great day imagining life at Stanley Road in the 1800s. Take a look at some of the photographs we have from the day!
Many many thanks to everybody who came to our used book sale! The year 5 children did an excellent job of organising and running the stalls. We were able to share hundreds of books with each other and we raised just over £60.00! This money will be used in order to further promote reading throughout school - thank you again for your support!
As you may be aware, the topic this half term at Stanley Road is 'Amazing Authors.' For our exit day on this topic, year 5 are hoping to organise and run a used book sale, with any money made to be used to buy new books for school.
Any donations of used or unwanted books are greatly appreciated! Please send them into school with your child.
A massive WELL DONE to both 5GH and 5LA who jointly won the overall school attendance award for last half term! The year 5 team are currently planning a reward for the children in these classes and we will keep you updated.
The whole of Stanley Road is doing an 'Amazing Authors' topic this half term. In year 5 we are focusing on the author Michael Morpurgo. On Thursday we enjoyed our Topic launch activities. These included book quizzes, making bookmarks and making Top Trumps cards. We also enjoyed taking part in book related challenges.
On Tuesday the children at Stanley Road were lucky enough to take part in a taster session in Karate for Concentration. Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed it and have been selected to continue with this programme on a weekly basis. We are looking forward to it very much!
We had an amazing day launching our brand new topic for this half term: The Mayans!
Mayan head dresses
We started by finding out about traditional Mayan dress and discovered that elaborate masks and head dresses were often worn during festivals and ceremonies to honour the Gods. People often chose an animal as a mascot, known as a totem, that represented their personality. Their totem would protect and guide them through life. We designed and made our own Mayan head dresses including our own totems.
The Mayans are famous for bringing the delicious treat chocolate to the world! The cocoa bean was used by the Maya to make a hot drink known as chocolatl, however it was certainly not the sweet treat that we enjoy today! It was actually very bitter, a bit like coffee. Take a look at our chocolate tasting session!
We all thoroughly enjoyed our fantastic trip to Blackpool Zoo to finish off our Life in the rainforest topic! Have a look at some of the things we got up to!
