The Mayans Topic Launch!

8/1/2016

We had an amazing day launching our brand new topic for this half term: The Mayans!

Mayan head dresses

We started by finding out about traditional Mayan dress and discovered that elaborate masks and head dresses were often worn during festivals and ceremonies to honour the Gods. People often chose an animal as a mascot, known as a totem, that represented their personality. Their totem would protect and guide them through life. We designed and made our own Mayan head dresses including our own totems.

Chocolate tasting

The Mayans are famous for bringing the delicious treat chocolate to the world! The cocoa bean was used by the Maya to make a hot drink known as chocolatl, however it was certainly not the sweet treat that we enjoy today! It was actually very bitter, a bit like coffee. Take a look at our chocolate tasting session!
