Year 5 visited Gallery Oldham to kickstart their “What makes Oldham special?” topic. To fully experience what Oldham has to offer, the children travelled on the tram to the Gallery. They took part in an exciting workshop where they learned to draw street scenes from Oldham using the huge panorama photograph on display. They also studied an LS Lowry painting to find out about his technique for drawing busy street scenes. The children learned a lot about Oldham’s history and worked hard to produce some excellent artwork based on this.

Writer and poet Ian Bland came to visit us at Stanley Road over 3 days to work with our children to develop their poetry writing skills. He inspired the Key Stage 2 children on Wednesday morning with a fantastic assembly and then worked with each class in school from Reception to Year 6 to help them develop their skills at writing and performing poetry. There was a real buzz around school about Ian's visit and it made a brilliant end to our Amazing Author topic. As part of our involvement in a programme called 21st Century Legacy, the World Champion Inline Skater Jenna Downing came to visit the school. She talked to the Key Stage 2 children in an extended assembly about her journey to achieve her goals. She emphasised how perseverance and hard work contributed to her success in her chosen sport. The 21st Century Legacy programme was set up after the London 2012 Olympics to ensure that Olympic values are taught to children across the UK. Everyone had a brilliant morning with Jenna and we know she has really raised the aspirations of many of the KS2 children at Stanley Road today. |
