Last week five of our children from Y5 and Y6 attended an exciting sporting event at The Radclyffe School in Oldham. They took part in a range of different sports including fencing, football, archery and boxing. As always, the children were great role models for our school and really enjoyed themselves.

Believe It Week – 20th to 24th March, 2017
This week the children at Stanley Road celebrated Believe It Week. The focus of the week was to learn about and take part in activities that promote a healthy mind and build up self esteem and resilience. Each activity belonged to one of the following categories:
On Monday Key Stage 2 took part in a resilience workshop delivered by Shenaz from Positively Mad. The children really enjoyed the activities and they were talking about resilience for the rest of the week. They were also referring back to the information she told them about neurons connecting in the brain. They were reminding other children that they should not talk in class because their neurons would not be able to transfer information if they did. Each class in Key stage 1 visited Castleshaw for a day over the week. They were able to explore nature and learn about the different animals and go on a long walk. There was lots of splashing in puddles and squelching in mud and the adults enjoyed this almost as much as the children did. By the time they returned to school on the bus there were many fast asleep within a few minutes. On Wednesday Jenny from MIND came to talk to Years 4, 5 and 6 about keeping a healthy mind. She was very impressed that all of our children could talk about resilience and what it meant. Year 4 were introduced to the Daily Mile. Each class went out for fifteen minutes and walked or jogged around the MUGA pitch. A sense of achievement was felt by everyone involved, whatever their fitness level, and they are going to continue doing this over the summer term. It will be extended to other classes over the summer and parents will be receiving invitations to come and join in. Other activities enjoyed by different classes were observational drawing, Yoga, Peer massage, giving and receiving compliments and food preparation and hygiene. Six of our Year 3 children took part in a special guided reading session at Madeleine Lindley's Book Centre in Oldham as part of a training event to show teachers how to deliver effective guided reading. The children were great ambassadors for the school and had a great time. As a way of saying thank you the children all got to choose a book to take home. We enjoyed a great World Book Day celebration today with a day crammed full of reading and talking about books. Teachers and children spent the day sharing their favourite books with each other and it was great to see the enthusiasm about reading across school. At the end of the day the children chose from a list of books that the teachers and teaching assistants had picked to read and it was great to see every single child listening to a great a story everywhere you looked around school! Here are some pictures of the children with their favourite books which they brought in from home to share with the class. |
