Music Curriculum
We are passing on the discoveries and work of the previous generations to the next, whilst empowering pupils to add to this body of knowledge in the future.
At Stanley Road, we have developed our own curriculum for music based on the Kodály method.
The Kodály Method is based on the idea that music should be accessible to everyone and that musical understanding develops best through singing, listening, movement and practical experience.
A central feature of the method is singing, particularly singing unaccompanied. Children learn musical concepts through carefully sequenced songs and activities before moving towards reading and writing music. At Stanley Road we commonly use folk songs and traditional music, as these provide simple, memorable musical material with significant cultural value.
Kodály teaching places an emphasis on developing the ability to imagine sounds internally without actually hearing them. To support this, we use solfa (solfège), such as do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, to help pupils understand the relationships between notes.
We also use hand signs, associated with different solfa pitches. These give children a visual and physical representation of pitch and help connect singing with musical notation.
Lessons may therefore include singing games, movement, rhythmic activities, listening exercises, solfa practice, musical reading and composition.
Alongside the development of pupils' musical skills, they learn about the rich history of music and study many significant works. They learn about the context in which they were composed and the impact these pieces of music have had over time.
Finally, our Y4 pupils have intensive instrument tuition throughout the year to help them learn to play the flute (starting with a simpler instrument called a toot).
