Sports Premium Information

The Sports Premium is designed to help children to get an active start in life, supporting primary schools to improve the quality of their PE and sport provision so that pupils experience the benefits of regular exercise – from becoming healthier both mentally and physically to improved behaviour and better academic achievement. The funding is a ring-fenced grant for primary schools to provide additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, sport and physical activity. Allocations to schools are determined by a formula based on pupil numbers. Schools with 17 or more pupils receive £16,000 and an additional £10 per pupil

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE which is provided. The funding must secure improvements in the following 5 key indicators:

  • Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
  • The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • A broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • Increased participation in competitive sport
